Incorporated in 1910, Mount Rainier is significant as a largely intact example of an early 20th century streetcar suburb. The city was named to the National Register of Historic places in 1990 and still has the look and feel of an old trolley town. In 2003, the city converted a dilapidated, 50 year old car repair shop on Route 1 into the nation's first "green" police station from recycled materials based on an energy-efficient design.
